Cicada
: I know where a few of the images are found, but does anyone know where the "trust in peace" sign is?
+
Sleuth
: I am pretty sure it is somewhere in LCC. I think it is pretty accessible, probably close to an easy trail.

Cicada
: Thanks, I found it with your help.

Astronomy
Pete
: For any astronomy enthusiasts out there: there is a neat visual convergence of planets happening this month. The planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn will be visible in the pre-dawn hours. They will even be lined up in order from the perspective of Earth!
If anyone wants to organize a viewing party, I'll come if you "planet".

Verses
Eric42
: Status report about Verses:
I solved the lyrics, found the signs and defined a line. I calculated the distance and bearing between those points. I don't yet see how to use the information to get the final location.
I was expecting that the line would be extended for some distance to point at the location, but what distance? There is a particular number (call it X) which the rhyme evokes, but I have discerned no indication of units. I notice that X miles would extend outside the search grid and X kilometers wouldn't. Using that number strikes me as a pretty big guess though. Another guess is to use the theme of the hunt, so I have a choice of X km, 6 mi, and 6 km which all land in the area. I could just go to all those places, but I feel like I should be able to get it down to just one answer by solving the poem.
+
Pete (yes, it is really me)
: Yes, you should combine your line with a defined distance, but none that (so far) your mind has assigned. Don't just go in blind or you could end up in a bind. Any more on this matter I'll decline to opine at this time.

Verne
: I live in CO so can't hunt in person but like solving the clues. I solved all the lyrics and got to the poem. I believe colored words are numbers and maybe the add up to number of paces to the downed tree? so Blue = 6 x 3 occurrences = 18. Silver = 2 x 6 occurrences = 12. Gold = 1 x 6 = 6. Red = 3 x 9 = 27. So add them all up = 64 paces to the saturn?

Potamus
: I am happy that someone solved this one. Good job!! I got to the poem, and identified the exact locations of the mining junk, but thought that the poem was trying to tell us that the "maths" was the sine (trigonometric function), since so many words rhymed with that. I calculated the angle between the mining equipment and then worked out the sine, which in effect made a rectangle with the mining equipment at two opposite corners. I hiked up there and scoured around the other two corners. Amazingly, both of the other corners were right on major trails, and the one in the NW corner had a significant fallen tree (supine pine) right there, 15 feet from the trail. I spent an hour searching all around there. There were some great places for treasure! But alas... Anyhow, congrats to the finders.
+
Pete
: Honestly, I love your solution. I like the way I ended up crafting this one, but doing something with "sine" would have been super cool as well.

: I am ALMOST done with the "shapes" hunt. It is taking so long partly because there are so many clues to make (and I am being pretty deliberate about them) and partly because I have stopped hurrying so much.
Based on the types of clues people have enjoyed the most so far, I think y'all are really going to like this hunt.

: This Saturn has been found, but the searcher left a "second-place prize" (worth at least $100) in its place so the hunt continues. The key to getting started is to search for the "instructions" on the home page; they are hidden in plain sight.

Search boundaries
Eric42
: The Map page says "All of the Saturns are hidden within hexagonal grid shown on this map.", and Images specifies that the images are in the search area. Are all parts of all the hunts within the grid? I have been assuming that, but I don't see it specified that (for instance) the "north dome" is in the search area.
+
Pete
: Yes. All the locations that you are expected to visit are within the search boundary.

chan
: Not sure if this was left deliberately vague or not, but supposing one of the puzzles mentions "yellow lines" on the map, would that refer to the yellow gridlines, or the yellow county lines?

Hunt Hints
Pete
: New hints and updates (as of 03Aug)
+

: To solve
my cipher
, you basically perform what I call "letter addition". A=1, B=2, and so on. For example: C+E is like 3+5, which equals 8, or 'H', so C+E=H. If you go over 26 then just subtract 26 to bring yourself around to the beginning of the alphabet.
Try it out with the cipher below. The keyword is
found here
, and the solution is a really nice clue.

Shapes #216
Saturn_Hunter
: Does anyone have any hints on how to apply the rounding error on #216 in Shapes. Think I have found enough info to make the clue into numbers. Don't want to give too much away but based off the book I assumed it needed to go under a transformation but can't get any numbers to work and unsure where to apply the rounding error. Thanks!
+
Eric42
: I have not even found the book yet. :(
+
Saturn_Hunter
: My hint would be that the popular sci fi book is a more recent book.

Hunt Hints
Pete
: New hints and updates as of 18Sep.
The Cline-Maxim treasure was found earlier today, so if anyone out there still has the treasure-hunting bug, here are some more hints to help you close-out my hunts.
+
Verses
: Many search parties have the locations of the two images (the "signs"). The distance along the defined line is not related to any absolute units (miles, kilometers, etc). The distance is a
certain ratio
of the distance between the "signs".

Arrows
: Start with the previous clues for this hunt (if you haven't already).
In the early stages of planning this hunt, I considered calling this one "System" but I thought that was too much of a giveaway. I also considered calling it by the word that you get from the enciphered text from the 03Aug hint, but that is as much or more of a giveaway.
I know it requires some long hikes to get to some of these arrows, but the truth is, you don't actually
need
to visit any of these sites to figure out where Saturn is; but it will take a LOT of the guess-work out of it if you visit a certain site and find what you are looking for.

Shapes
: The aforementioned sci-fi book deals with an encounter with an alien species which uses a base-6 (senary) number system. One step of the clue produces human-approximations of the symbols used by that alien race. The rounding correction can be applied after converting to a base-10 number to hopefully make the number a little more recognizable.
I have also added more helpful info to the revealed text on q214.

Shapes searching
Eric42
: We went looking for the Shapes Saturn yesterday evening (9/22) and failed to find it before it got dark. I am pretty confident that we were in the right area. I was *totally* confident that it was the right area up until we failed to find it. Now I'm not as sure, but I double-checked all the clues, and it still looks like that is the right place. So we'll be going back to look more, probably on Sunday if it's not found by someone else before then. Good luck, everyone! I know there are others actively searching, because on our way back we heard another group down the hill and they called to us asking if we were looking for the silver Saturn and whether we found it.
+
Saturn_Hunter
: It was fun seeing you Eric42. Best of luck in your search.
+
Eric42
: Thanks, same. I now see the main mistake I made. I interpreted "a relatively level area" completely wrong. I was thinking it was a small pocket of levelness, not a big area. I wasn't looking in the right area at all. After searching every tree in the wrong places, I finally went up to the right area after you had already snagged it. Good find!
